UPSC Mains Exam 2024: Preparation tips by Rimita Saha (AIR 566) in UPSC CSE 2023

With the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declaring the results of UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination on July 1, candidates who have qualified the exam have started their final leg of preparation for the UPSC Civil Services (Mains) examination. A total of 14,625 candidates have qualified the preliminary examination. The candidates will be appearing in the UPSC Civil Services Mains examination scheduled to commence on September 20.

To help candidates with their final preparation, The Telegraph Online Edugraph spoke with Rimita Saha (AIR 566) in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2023, who shared her valuable insights on cracking the Civil Services Mains Examination.

Speaking on the main areas that should be in focus, Rimita advised candidates to focus more on revision and rigorous answer writing as most of the portion from General Studies have been covered during the Preliminary examination.

"The next two-three months should be primarily used for revision and rigorous answer writing. Few topics like world history, security etc which are solely in the Mains syllabus also need to be covered. Among all the subjects, optional, essay and ethics have lately proven to be the deal-makers. Importance should be given to Optional revision and answer-writing in these few weeks," said Rimita.

"Furthermore, practising the previous year questions is also of utmost significance. Limited resources with multiple revisions is the key. Practising answer-writing with a timer and writing two full-length mock tests in a single day is very important. This prepares the candidates for the D-day, where speed and accuracy prove to be the game-changers," she added.

Commenting on the language papers, which are qualifying in nature, she asked candidates to practice and revise the basic grammar books of Class 10 or Class 12.

"Any grammar book of 10th or 12th standard can be taken up for the papers, and thereafter, referring the previous year question papers, the type of questions can be identified which can then be revised from the book. Since the papers are qualifying in nature, very limited time should be dedicated for them," advised Rimita.

"For the GS papers, thorough revision and answer-writing is the key. One can take up any GS test series, where evaluation is done properly with detailed feedback. This will help the candidate to understand the mistakes or shortcomings in the answers and the places where improvement can be done. Referring to different past successful candidates can also help understand their approaches. Each question needs to be understood properly, broken down into sub-parts and each sub-part should be addressed separately. Proper sub-headings, relevant introduction and conclusion are important parameters of a good answer," she said. She added that including relevant diagrams, quotations, data and graphical representations can also help increase the marks.

The essay paper holds a lot of significance in the UPSC Mains Exam. Commenting on the approach students should have towards the paper, she said, "For the essay paper, there has been a shift of focus towards philosophical topics more lately. This sometimes becomes tricky to handle in the exam hall. First, reading a few essays of past successful candidates with good essay scores can be done. This provides an idea of how to frame an essay. Second, understanding the essence of the topic is very important."

"Brainstorming for the first few minutes before starting the essay is important. This helps to organise the thoughts in one’s mind and arrange them in order of priority. This also gives a proper structure to the essay. Lastly, including quotations and anecdotes can be done wherever relevant. The thought that the use of difficult words and jargon fetches more marks is a myth. Accurate expression of thoughts in a lucid manner is always appreciated," she added.

Optional subject is one of major deciding factors in UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination. Here's what Rimita had to say on preparation strategies to be followed for the optional subject.

"Before Prelims, at least one reading of the optional paper must be completed. After prelims, answer writing and revision are the primary strategies. Similar to GS, one can take up a test series from any institute and solve them in a time-bound manner. Furthermore, previous year's questions also need to be practised. At least 3-4 revisions of the optional paper need to be done before the Mains exam," she said.

Lastly, she advised candidates to focus on time management while preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination.

"While attempting the questions, one can allocate time for questions based on their marks. For example, 6-7 minutes for the 10-mark questions and 8-10 minutes for the 15-mark questions. This helps in keeping track of time during the exam. For the Ethics paper, it is suggested to attempt Section A first, followed by the case studies. One should try to attempt all questions without fail. This helps in maximising the marks in Mains, where even 1 mark can make a lot of difference," she said.

CUET UG Exam Preparation Tips 2024 for English Language Paper

With the class 12 board exams drawing to a close, students across the country are gearing up for the next big step: the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) 2024 entrance exams for college admissions.

It is not just another run-of-the-mill exam; it is a national level event that opens doors for the aspiring college-goers to over 250 prestigious central, state, deemed, and private universities across India. Scheduled to take place between May 15 and May 31, 2024, the hybrid examination format proposed for CUET (UG) 2024 combines both computer-based testing and pen-and-paper methods, catering to the diverse needs of test-takers.

Today, The Telegraph Online Edugraph will shed light on effective preparation strategies for cracking the CUET (UG) 2024 English Language exam. For delving into its nuances, we reached out to Dr Madhumita Barua, Assistant Professor in English at Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata. With 17 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level and 12 years at the postgraduate level, Dr Barua offers invaluable seasoned insights for students aiming to excel in the CUET (UG) 2024 English Language subject paper.

We asked Dr Barua for effective time management tips considering that students will need to attempt at least 40 out of 50 questions in a 45-minute duration. Our learned academic observed, “time management is paramount in the CUET UG 2024 English Language section. 35-40% of the questions are comprehension based. These take more time, but that doesn't mean there will be different passages for every question. From each passage, 4-5 questions are set. If a student reads one passage carefully she/ he can attempt 4-5 questions in no time at all!"

Further, the Reading Comprehension section, with its diverse range of passages from factual to narrative and literary, demands a multifaceted approach, emphasised Dr Barua. She underscored the value of exposure to varied literature beyond textbooks, recommended “solving question papers from previous years”, and developing familiarity with different writing styles.

While navigating the objective type questions in the Verbal Ability section, Dr Barua advised students cautious deliberation to avoid falling into traps of similarity among options. With a keen eye for context and reasoning, test-takers can enhance their accuracy and efficiency. “Sometimes adopting a process of elimination is necessary to find out the correct option,” she said incisively.

Tackling the Rearranging the Parts section often poses a unique challenge for many students. For excelling in this aspect of the exam, Dr Barua suggested, “reading the parts repeatedly” since getting the sense is the key. Also, “having a knowledge of correct English syntax is necessary for this part,” she added.

As for avoiding the common pitfalls associated with the Choosing the Correct Word section, drawing on her years of experience, Dr Barua urged the exam-takers to “focus on the question, not make silly mistakes in a hurry and eliminate the wrong options thereby.”

The Synonyms-Antonyms as well as the Vocabulary sections can sometimes be tricky due to nuances in language. For vocabulary enrichment, active engagement through word games, frequent dictionary consultation, and usage in daily communication is key. Moreover, Dr Barua stressed the need for discernment in tackling Synonyms and Antonyms. “Sometimes the words are given in pairs, such as, ‘Hinder : Assist’ and ‘Resolute : Determined’-- however, the relationship between the two pairs of words are not the same,” she observed. She encouraged students to decipher the distinct relationships between words.

As students gear up for the CUET UG 2024 English Language paper, Dr Barua offered a final word of advice: embrace the breadth of the English language beyond the syllabus. From practising figures of speech to idiomatic expressions, exploring diverse sources such as news bulletins, documentaries, and movies, to maintaining composure of mind and strategic time management is the recipe for success!

Remember, dear students, preparation is key, but so is confidence. Believe in yourself, trust in your abilities, and tackle each question with a cool head and a steady hand. You've got this!

Top 10 career options in India’s social sector for youth

The social sector in India has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the years, with a growing focus on youth-led initiatives that drive change at the grassroots level. As a Social development expert working in India and driving programs like SBI Youth for India, it is my privilege to present the top 10 career options in India's social sector for the youth. The young population of India possesses immense potential to create a positive impact on society by actively participating in various roles within the social sector. These careers not only offer fulfilling and meaningful work but also contribute to the overall development of the nation.

1. Social Entrepreneurship:

Social entrepreneurship involves identifying social problems and innovating sustainable solutions to address them. Youth-led social enterprises can bring fresh perspectives, energy, and technology-driven ideas to tackle societal challenges. By empowering the youth to become social entrepreneurs, they can create employment opportunities, drive economic growth, and improve the well-being of communities.

2. Community Organising:

Community organising is a crucial aspect of social development, where the youth can play a vital role. Engaging in community mobilisation, youth-led initiatives can encourage collective action, foster social cohesion, and amplify the voices of marginalised groups. By empowering communities, the youth can drive positive changes in areas like education, health, and environmental sustainability.

3. Non-Profit Management:

Youth aspiring to work in the social sector can consider a career in nonprofit management. As managers, they oversee the operations of NGOs and charitable organizations, ensuring efficient utilization of resources, implementing impactful projects, and maintaining transparency in governance. The energy and enthusiasm of the youth can bring a fresh approach to organizational management and drive greater social impact.

4. Education and Skill Development:

Education and skill development are essential for India's socio-economic progress. Youth-led initiatives in this domain can focus on designing innovative educational programs, vocational training, and mentoring to equip the underprivileged with skills that improve their employability and overall quality of life.

5. Public Policy and Advocacy:

Youth can actively engage in public policy and advocacy work to influence decision-making processes at local, state, and national levels. By raising awareness about critical issues, lobbying for policy changes, and collaborating with policymakers, the youth can ensure that the social sector receives the attention and support it deserves.

6. Environmental Sustainability:

With environmental challenges becoming more pressing, the youth can contribute significantly to environmental sustainability. Initiatives like waste management, renewable energy adoption, afforestation drives, and conservation efforts can be led by the youth, making a substantial contribution to the country's sustainable development.

7. Alternate Livelihood Generation:

Creating alternate livelihood opportunities is crucial for reducing poverty and fostering inclusive development. Youth-led initiatives can focus on identifying and promoting income-generating activities for marginalized communities. These initiatives can include setting up vocational training centres, promoting handicrafts and traditional art, supporting rural entrepreneurship, and encouraging sustainable agriculture practices.

8. Women Empowerment:

Gender equality is a critical aspect of India's social development. The youth can drive initiatives to empower women by providing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. They can work towards creating a more inclusive society that recognizes and values women's contributions.

9. Alternate Energy:

Amidst the global climate crisis and the urgent need to transition towards renewable energy sources, the role of youth-led initiatives in the alternate energy sector becomes paramount. As the demand for energy continues to rise, traditional fossil fuels are not sustainable in the long run, and India's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions necessitates a shift to cleaner and greener energy alternatives.

10. Art and Culture for Social Change:

The power of art and culture in driving social change is immense. Youth can use their creative talents to raise awareness about social issues, preserve and promote traditional art forms, and foster cultural exchange to build bridges of understanding among diverse communities.

The social sector in India offers a plethora of career options for the youth to make a significant impact on society. Youth-led initiatives bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and boundless energy to address the country's most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. I encourage young individuals to explore these diverse career options in the social sector, driving positive change, and contributing to India's overall development. By leveraging their passion, skills, and determination, the youth can be the driving force in building a more equitable and prosperous India.

Important tips for women leadership in today's time

Being a leader is not always easy. It is about bringing together like-minded people to share a similar vision of a better future. It usually requires overcoming challenges, juggling competing agendas, and working with limited resources. Despite making the best efforts, sometimes you will have a downfall while at all other times, you will succeed.

These obstacles multiply many folds for women in leadership positions. This holds for the majority of working women, even though many women have risen to leadership positions and are making significant strides not only in their businesses, but also in the day-to-day operation of their companies by demonstrating deep knowledge, experience, and an air of confidence that makes them true role models.

Women possess a distinct leadership style that influences the decision-making process and how they lead their teams. Research shows that women tend to be more collaborative, communicative, and empathetic in their interactions. The diversity of perspectives that women bring to the table can lead to more creative solutions.

To help women leaders sustain and grow in their leadership roles, a few resourceful tips are mentioned below:

1. Prioritise your well-being - This is one of the most important things you can do as a female leader. Taking this approach, women leaders can take a broader look at mental and physical health, as well as happiness in general. Leaders who place a high priority on well-being are better able to manage the demands of their roles and make more informed decisions. Balance your work and personal lives by taking breaks, managing stress, and taking care of yourself.

2. Trust yourself in the journey: Effective leadership largely depends on self-belief and trust in one's abilities. An effective leader must possess a strong sense of self-confidence to make a positive contribution. When women leaders are confident in themselves and believe in their visions and goals, they can inspire others to believe in their strengths and abilities. It can lead to a more positive and productive working environment.

3. Build strong relationships: Women leaders should work to develop strong relationships with their team/s, it will facilitate creating a positive work environment. The best way to do this is through open communication, empathy, and respect. Women leaders should also invest in the growth of their team members, providing them with opportunities to learn and grow. In this way, leadership can gain trust, which results in a more motivated, engaged, and productive workforce.

4. Have a Flexible Attitude: One of the most essential qualities for women in leadership roles is their ability to adapt to change. Maintain a flexible attitude throughout your tenure as a leader to cope with a dynamic and changing workplace. Besides helping you grow; this will also bring a degree of diversity in you that is crucial for leaders.

5. Prioritise Work-Life Balance- Women leaders who prioritize work-life balance can serve as role models for their team members and colleagues, showing them that it is possible to be successful while also prioritizing self-care. Research has shown that employees who have a good work-life balance are more productive and engaged. To be able to successfully maintain a work-life balance helps in preventing burnout.

6. Enhance your leadership style: Everyone has a unique leadership style, so finding the one that works for a woman leader is crucial. It is not inappropriate to learn from other successful women leaders, but in that journey, it is equally important to remain true to yourself and your values. Women in leadership roles with strong values can have a profound influence on society and the community at large by creating an organization that is prosperous, and resilient, and in turn, help to create a better world for everyone.

7. Be open to diversity and inclusion: A diverse team with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives can bring a lot of value to an organization. Women leaders should embrace diversity and inclusion because it leads to better business decisions, improved employee engagement, increased productivity, and entrepreneurship, attracting and retaining talent, promoting social responsibility, and meeting customer needs.

8. The road ahead: Based on my experience as the founder of a fast-paced HR tech organization, my advice to women leaders will be to network within their industry and build strong connections, it will help them to carve their path. Don’t be afraid to take risks: include experts from your industry in your team and take calculated risks. There is no one size fits all formula for this ongoing dilemma. Based on your current role and future aspirations, identify your goal, and take the journey backed by strategic learning and development.

Study Abroad: Tips to prepare for TOEFL, IELTS by Ritu Rahul Rathod

IELTS and TOEFL are English proficiency tests that applicants must pass to be eligible for the plethora of study abroad opportunities available. These tests are widely accepted and are usually mandatory for one to be accepted into a foreign university. In fact, even employers in English speaking countries will ask for a score from one of these tests to consider you for employment. Hence, if you are someone who plans to work or study abroad, you must prove your English proficiency by passing one of these tests. To help you navigate the journey of giving the TOEFL or IELTS exams, The Telegraph Online Edugraph brings you expert tips from Mrs Ritu Rahul Rathod.

Mrs Rathod has been mentoring students in the English language for the past 35 years in Mumbai, New York and across the world and has earned herself all-round respect and credit. Till date, she has coached nearly 10,000 students who are now proud and successful citizens of the world. She encourages independent inquiry and nurtures an open mind to help children develop a lifelong interest in language and literature to appreciate formal stylistic and aesthetic qualities of text. Read below to know her tips and strategies for cracking through the exam.

1) From your 35+ years of experience, please give our readers a guide to cracking the TOEFL exams.

Taking the TOEFL can be a very stressful experience because of many reasons. You have to get a specific score to get into your dream college. A lot of money is involved as well, to sit for the test. Besides, you have to dedicate a lot of time to prepare for the test. The test center may be located in a crowded place with a lot of noise. You may not have slept too well the previous night. Unfortunately, you cannot change any of that! But preparing for TOEFL with enough time on hand is the best you can do to lower your stress levels on the day of the test. Here are 5 TOEFL preparation strategies I can suggest:

  1. Practice Taking Notes: During TOEFL, you will be allowed to listen to the audio clips just once. Based on what you hear, you have to answer questions, speak, or write. Since you cannot replay the audio, you should take down notes and do it well.
  • Try to take down notes either in your native language or in English as much as possible. You should practice both.
  • You should try to listen carefully and learn to take down notes in real time, without missing any of the points. Try to listen to diverse audio clips of various lengths and complexity levels.
  • To check how well you have taken down the notes, you should listen to the same clip again.
  • Do not miss out on elementary things like the pattern of your notes and make sure you are able to read what you write.
  • It will help you immensely if you are able to take down notes with all the important information in real time and with confidence. This will not only help you clear your TOEFL, but also in your future studies.

    2. Take Mock Tests: When you start preparing for TOEFL, you are surely aiming for a certain score. To understand whether you are getting closer to that, you must take as many mock tests as you can. These will help you get an actual feel of the test environment, question types, and challenges that you may face on the big day. There are many ways to take mock TOEFL tests, such as using past test papers to track how you are progressing.

    3. Practice Reading Every Day: You must practice reading every day. Native English speakers, too, build their vocabularies through reading. The more you read, the more exposure you get to new concepts and words. And the more carefully you read, the more you make your reading comprehension skills stronger. Read widely and carefully to expand your range of subjects. You never know what subjects you will have to deal with in your TOEFL, so it is best to make your comfort zone wider.

    4. Listen to Podcasts: Today, there are many options available online. You get lots of English language talks, such as radio and podcasts by the BBC and NPR, besides comedy and news programs. Listening to native English speakers at their natural speed will improve your listening comprehension skill. Besides, you can improve your speaking skills by trying to repeat the words the speaker says. Understanding an audio clip is harder than understanding a video because you do not get any context clues. That is why podcasts are better for Listening Comprehension practice.

    5. Learn Typing: In the writing section, you have to type your answers on an unfamiliar computer with a QWERTY keyboard. If you take time on typing out your answers, you will not get much time to write an essay of high quality. It may be a simple skill, but many people do not spend time on it. So, even before you start preparing for TOEFL, make sure you learn to type in English quickly on a QWERTY keyboard. There are plenty of free tools available online to help you learn to type quickly.

2) Thank you for your insights on the TOEFL exam. Please elaborate on the IELTS exam as well.

Try to devote time to improve your computer skills. Now, Internet-based Test (iBT) is the most common format for IELTS. If you are not adept with the computer, it can make you nervous, and will also slow you down. Try to spend time to understand the pattern of the questions. It will help you in many ways if you can boost your memory. Try to develop your essay writing skills and, finally, learn to manage time really well.

3) What is the best way for students to prepare for IELTS after your secondary exams?

There is no ‘best way’ to prepare for IELTS after the secondary exams because it depends on individual candidates. Some may take just a few days, while others will need months. But, basically, you should take as many mock tests as possible to make sure you understand the test format perfectly. Try to be aware of the exam’s time constraints and take mock tests in real-time. Try to improve your English speaking abilities and follow a strategy to prepare for the test. Multitask when listening to audio clips in English. Try to read up as much as you can on a wide range of subjects.

4) Which are some of the best courses to study in Western countries?

There are endless study opportunities in countries like the US, UK, Canada and Australia. You can study courses such as Bachelor of Business and Management; Bachelor of Computer Science and IT; Bachelor of Electrical Engineering; Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Construction; Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Architecture; Bachelor of Design; Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of Business Administration; Diploma in Business Administration; BS in Management Science; BA in Management Science; BA in Finance Management; BA in Accounting Management; B.Com (Finance and Accounting); Teachers’ Training Courses; Bachelor of Library and Information Science and Bachelor of Library Science and many others.
